Why is AI increasing the workload of employees instead of reducing it?
Introduction
When ChatGPT came into the limelight in 2022, Anurag Garg, the founder of a PR agency, was very excited about incorporating it to help in the functioning of his office.
He wanted that it would help him compete with his rival companies.
Garg encouraged his employees to use Artificial Intelligence tools. He asked all the employees of the agency to use these language tools for their work.
The agency included story ideas for clients, proposals to be prepared for the media, interview notes and full details of the meeting.
However, due to these tools, the work of his team increased instead of becoming easier and the employees started getting upset. He said that it takes a lot of time to use it.
To use the tool, first the employees have to prepare a brief for ChatGPT. After this, the information received had to be checked again, and there were many mistakes in that too.
And in the meantime, many times the platform was updated, so the employees had to re-learn these things related to the tools, which took extra time.
Work time doubled for Employees?
Some employees said in the survey that their workload is increasing due to the use of Artificial Intelligence tools.
On the use of tools, Anurag Garg says, “There were a lot of distractions in it. The team told me that the time taken for work has doubled due to the use of these tools.”
He said, “Because, we were expecting those people to use all the Artificial Intelligence tools.”
Garg said, “The purpose of promoting the use of these tools in the company was to simplify the work of the people, but in reality, the work of the people was increasing due to this.”
He said that there is a flood of Artificial Intelligence tools in the market, but you cannot solve many problems with the help of one tool. Then Garg told his team not to use AI tools for all tasks.
The result is that now his team uses these tools as the primary source for research. And now everyone is happier than before.
What did the survey reveal?
By the way, the tension that Garg and his team felt while using these tools is also reflected in the recent research.
A freelancer platform ‘Upwork’ conducted a survey with 2500 employees. These employees were from America, Britain, Australia and Canada.
96 percent of them said that they expected that the use of Artificial Intelligence tools would increase the productivity of their company. Of these, 81 percent admitted that they requested their employees to use it.
However, 77 percent of the employees surveyed admitted that Artificial Intelligence tools reduced their productivity and increased their work.
At the same time, 47 percent of the employees said that they have no idea how and to what extent productivity can be increased according to the expectations of the employers.
61 percent of people believe that the use of tools during work increases the chances of stress and irritation.
In a survey conducted by CV writing company Resume Now, 43 percent of people believed that it affects work-life balance.
Work management platform Asana has done a study. It talks about the effects of launching work-based apps.
This survey includes 9,615 employees from Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Britain and the US. They said that they use 6 to 15 apps at the workplace.
Among them, 15 percent people said that due to so many tools, they sometimes forget to check messages and notifications.
What do experts say?
Management professor Leah Steele says that employees are expected to do more work with fewer resources.
Management professor Casey Holmes at the University of California, Los Angeles commented on this study.
He said, “To use more than one app, they have to learn first, which requires more time.”
The professor said, “And changing them in between also costs time, which is a very bad thing. Because, we are more sensitive about wasted time.”
Leah Steele has now become a coach from a lawyer. She helps legal professionals to get rid of mental stress.
Many people who come to her in the hope of help have a problem that after the advent of AI-based productivity tools, their companies are expecting a lot more productivity from them.
In such a situation, the workload on them is increasing.
She says, “The biggest thing I see is that there is a constant demand to do more work with less resources, but firms are ignoring the fact that the technology they are adding to the system is not helping.” Steel said, “Everything is growing very fast. This battle to stay on top is a constant. There is a demand to acquire expertise in this.” She says that lawyers are now experiencing mental stress. But this is not only due to the growth of technology and Artificial Intelligence tools, it is also due to its impact.
Technology will have to be learned
Alicia Navarro says that AI can prove to be a big help for small firms.
The Law Society of England and Wales acknowledged that lawyers should get more support from the top people of law firms so that they can use new technology like AI more in their work. “It takes time to learn those tools and to incorporate them into your work,” he said.
“Many technologies were not originally designed for the legal field, so the transition can be more challenging,” Atkinson said.
Alicia Navarro is the founder and chief executive of Flon, an online platform that helps people focus on “deep work,” tasks that require sustained concentration.
She acknowledges that there is a flood of Artificial Intelligence tools, but they need to be used properly.
“These Artificial Intelligence tools can lead to better productivity in our lives, but before that, these tools need training and filtering,” she said.
But she also believes that Artificial intelligence tools can be a great help for small companies with limited resources.
